Rosgosstrakh, the main sponsor of the Russian Premier Liga and the country’s largest insurance company,
has threatened to sue the League for 9 million dollars for failing to fulfill its contractual obligations. The
damages are likely to be in the region of several million dollars. In July 2006 Rosgosstrakh struck a
sponsorship deal with the Liga worth 52.5 million dollars. The league wanted the media to use the wording of
Rosgosstrakh Russian Football League in coverage of the tournament. The leading sporting papers and TV
channels were forced to do so under the threat of having their accreditations for the matches withdrawn - but
several newspapers refused.
